Paseo Baptist Church

Founded in 1884 as the Shiloh Baptist Mission, Paseo Baptist Church has been a cornerstone of faith and community in Kansas City for over a century. The church's journey began humbly at 20th Street and Baltimore Avenue with fourteen charter members, led by Reverend G.A. Turner. Over the years, the church underwent several relocations and transformations, each marking a significant chapter in its history and growth. Initially moving to Harrison Street between 18th and 19th Streets, the congregation later settled at 1322 East 18th Street, organized under the name Mount Carmel Baptist Church. This period saw the appointment of four dedicated deacons: George Shannon, Henry Johnson, Major Hyde, and Mose Owens. Their commitment laid the foundation for what would become a thriving community of faith.

In 1888, Reverend C. Shackleford assumed leadership as the second pastor, ushering in a period of expansion both in membership and influence. The church's footprint continued to grow, culminating in a move to 1825 Vine Street in July 1896, under the tenure of Reverend Dan Jones. This relocation marked a pivotal moment as the church sought to accommodate its expanding congregation and enhance its ministry outreach. In February 1897, Reverend T.H. Ewing took the helm, overseeing further development and the appointment of new deacons and trustees who would steer the church through the early 20th century. However, it was under the dynamic leadership of Reverend Daniel Arthur Holmes, beginning in 1921, that Paseo Baptist Church truly flourished.

Dr. Holmes' tenure marked an era of transformation and growth. His visionary leadership led the church to move once again, this time to its current location facing Paseo Boulevard at the southeast corner of 25th Street in 1931. The construction of this new edifice, at a cost of $250,000, reflected the church's commitment to providing a spiritual home that also served as a beacon of hope and community for Kansas City residents. Throughout the decades that followed, Paseo Baptist Church continued to thrive under Dr. Holmes' guidance, expanding its ministries and outreach programs. The church became not only a spiritual center but also an integral part of the city's religious and civic life. In 1958, significant renovations further enhanced the beauty and functionality of the church, ensuring it remained a welcoming place for worship and community engagement.

Today, Paseo Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring strength of faith and community. From its modest beginnings as a mission to its current role as a vibrant hub of spiritual life, the church continues to embody the values of love, service, and fellowship that have defined it for over a century. As it looks to the future, Paseo Baptist Church remains committed to serving its congregation and the wider Kansas City community, guided by its rich history and unwavering faith.
