Heider-James Residence

4212 Washington Street

Heider-James Residence

Built in 1896

The Heider-James Residence is a good example of a house related to the African American enclave in Steptoe.  It was built be German immigrant, Martin Heider and subsequently bought by Arthur & Beatrice James.  Beatrice James still resides at the house.  Arthur James was the second African American master plumber in Kansas City and is representative of population of the African American community of Steptoe. This Steptoe neighborhood north of 43rd Street has lost much of its fabric and this is one of the few remaining houses of this important African American enclave in the Westport area of Kansas City. Listed on the Kansas City Register of Historic Places on November 11, 2013
