LINCOLN THEATER
1330-34 E 18th Street (DEMOLISHED)
LINCOLN ThEATER/FOX THEATER
The Lincoln Theatre, inaugurated on February 22, 1920, stood as a cornerstone of African American culture in Kansas City. It was designed by Greenebaum & Hardy in 1919, but the theater underwent a significant redesign in 1936 by Robert O. Boller of the Boller Brothers. It was altered from the Beaux Arts style to a sleek Streamline Moderne style and reducing seating from 1,500 to 1,350.
Throughout its history, the Lincoln Theatre hosted a variety of productions that showcased African American talent and culture. Notable performances included Langston Hughes and Arna Bontemps' presentations at the Centennial M.E. Church, organized by the Paseo Branch of the YWCA. Additionally, the theater featured "Claudia" by the Negro Drama Group of New York at Music Hall in 1946, and memorable productions such as "Othello" starring Paul Robeson, presented by the Theatre Guild around 1945.
Sadly, the Lincoln Theatre closed its doors in 1953, ending an era of cultural vibrancy and artistic expression and the building was demolished in 1967. Despite its closure, the theater remains a significant landmark in the history of African American theater and arts in Kansas City, reflecting a period of creativity and community pride.
